German-British composer considered as one of the most important post-minimalist musicians and an indisputable figure of neo-classical music. Born in 1966 in Hamelin, Germany, this prolific composer succeeds in reaching a wide public through his music, by approaching various musical fields, as evidenced by his numerous works for soloists but also his compositions for the stage and the screen. For Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island", Richter remixes the song "Bitter Earth" under the title "On the Nature of Daylight". Richter also carries out projects for ballet and opera and generally stage creations. One of his most famous works is the recomposition of the Four Seasons.
Richter acquired his musical foundations in classical music. He started piano and composition at the University of Edinburgh, then at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Following his studies, he co-founded with other colleagues at the University of Edinburgh, the "Piano Circus Ensemble", with which he spent the next 10 years performing minimalistic works of composers such as Arvö Pärt, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Julia Wolfe and others.
During the 1990s, he explored horizons beyond classical music, notably folk music and punk.
His style is based on the meeting between his classical music education, electronic music, punk and psychedelic music. In his music, he takes repetitive musical figures to which he adds an expressive and emotional aspect (post-minimalism) and uses musical sources from the past (neo-classicism) as well as electronic tools, computers and synthesisers.
