"Nessum Dorma" is an aria (a solo voice piece) from Giacomo Puccini's opera "Turandot", popularised in the 1990s by Luciano Pavarotti. It is sung by Calaf, who is in love with the beautiful but cruel and cold-hearted Princess Turandot and is one of the 3 suitors to marry the princess. However, she does not want to get married, so in order for someone to be qualified for this marriage, he must answer 3 riddles, otherwise he will be beheaded. In the aria, Calaf expresses his certainty that he will marry the princess as he has answered the 3 riddles.
The melody is one of the most beautiful in the history of opera. It sources its power from the existence of love and self-sacrifice in the cruel world of Turandot. And this is what we all want to believe in: how love finally champions in the most cruel and violent worlds.
There have been many great performances of this magnificent aria, but one of the most unforgettable ones is at the 1990 concert, sang after the FIFA World Cup in Italy, by the 3 tenors: Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti.
