In this piece, which is part of Rimsky-Korsakov's opera "The Tale of Tsar Sultan", the composer is imitating the sounds of a bumblebee's flight, sometimes chaotic and sometimes changing its patterns. However, this is not an ordinary bumblebee, but a prince who has been turned into a bumblebee by a magic swan, in order to be able to visit his father, the Tsar (who has been tricked to believe that his son is not alive) without being perceived.
Imagine the bumblebee whirling and buzzing around the Tsar and then quickly flying away so that is does not get caught.
