"Pastoral symphony" (Symphony No 6 / Movement 2)

Period

Classical

Instruments

Orchestra

One of the warmest music creations by Beethoven, this symphony was an expression of his love for nature. Beethoven was passionate for nature and frequently left Vienna to walk in the countryside or work in rural locations. As he had written in a letter: "How delighted I will be to ramble for awhile through the bushes, woods, under trees, through grass, and around rocks. No one can love the country as much as I do. For surely woods, trees, and rocks produce the echo that man desires to hear".

The music in "Pastoral Symphony" captures not only his affinity for nature but also describes  the "echo" of nature,  like a painting of nature. For example, the second movement with the title "Scene by the brook," includes the famous bird calls: flute for the nightingale, oboe for the quail, and two clarinets for the cuckoo. Here Beethoven lets his imagination free by transcribing birdsong into a symphony. Magical sounds which make the listener imagine the beauties of nature.
