"Enticing Schubert tango" (Piano Trio No 2 in E Flat Major, Op 100, D929)

Composer

Franz Schubert

Period

Classical

Instruments

Strings/Keyboard

Described by Robert Schumann as "spirited, masculine and dramatic" in contrast to the more "passive, lyrical and feminine" music compositions by Schubert, this piece is one of the best musical works of the classical repertoire. The second movement which is the most famous one, is a kind of a heavy and dramatic tango (although this type of dance did not exist at that time), but with a very beautiful melody. The music, through its sad and precise tango march,  gives the impression that something menacing and violent is gradually approaching. But as the music becomes louder and reaches a dramatic climax, there is a feeling of great happiness and ecstasy.  The tango march returns to repeat the same cycle for several times, although with some lighter and more playful variations. The whole music is full of alternations between despair and happiness, just like the cycle of ups and downs in life. A title to consider for this piece: "Enticing Schubert tango".
