"Bach double" (Double Violin Concerto / Movements 1 and 2)

Period

Baroque

Instruments

Strings

One of the most popular works by Bach, familiarly known as "Bach Double" and written around 1730, this is a representative example of the Baroque style of music. Its melody is exquisite and the music speaks for itself.

Bach wrote the piece for two solo violin performers who are in such an equal dialogue with each other that it is sometimes hard to distinguish which solo violin is playing as their parts are so intertwined together. The 2 solo performers are in a constant musical dialogue over the harmonic and rhythmic playing of the strings orchestra.

In the first movement, the two violins seem to spark off each other in an energetic discussion. But in the second movement the dynamism calms down and it seems that Bach is telling the story of two faithful lovers engaged in a very tender and intimate dialogue. If you listen to this movement closer, you might feel a musical "heartbeat".

Although this concerto was originally composed for two violins, as its name suggests, there has also been an adaptation for violoncellos which is also an interesting version of this masterpiece.
