This piece is part of a set of innovative 9 pieces with the title "Bachianas Brasileiras", composed by Heitor Villa-Lobos between 1931 and 1945, as a tribute to Bach and an attempt to fuse Baroque music with Brazilian folk music. The first 2 movements of "Bachiana Brasileira No 4" are slow, graceful and very moving but also sad melodies, deeply rooted on Bach's style. They are based on a single theme, repeated in a number of variations, sometimes increasing their intensity to reach a climax and thus an emotional peak. As we move on to the next movements, the style becomes more Brazilian, with a dancing and more festive mood and with influences of Brazilian folk songs. An exemplary mix of western art and Brazilian music which makes you feel like listening to a different Bach...one with Brazilian origins.
