Instruments

Vocals/Opera

"O mio babbino caro" ("Oh my dear papa") is an aria (vocal solo usually found within a larger piece of music, generally an opera) from the opera "Gianni Schicchi" (1918) by Giacomo Puccini. The aria comes in the middle of the opera where Schicchi’s daughter, Lauretta, sings after tensions rise between her father and the family of the boy that she loves. She sings this aria to beg her father to help her marry her loved one by threatening to throw herself in the river. The opera is full of fraudulent actions, anger and jealousy and what Lauretta asks her father to do, entails deceiving others (to gain the acceptance of Rinuccio's family, by impersonating a dead uncle and changing his will, which he finally does but for his own benefit) but despite all this, the piece is one of the most beautiful and touching melodies in the history of music.
