"River of hope" (Cello Suite 1)

Period

Baroque

Instruments

Strings

This is the first of the 6 "Cello Suites", which are some of Bach's greatest musical achievements, and among the most frequently played and recognizable solo compositions ever written for cello. Bach was very innovative when he composed the "Cello Suites", as he was probably the first composer who wrote solo works for a bass instrument, such as the cello.

The famous cello player Yo-Yo-Ma had once told the audience of the inner narrative he hears in this famous piece of music:

“That piece, in some strange coded way that culture does, represents in many ways the water that is flowing right in front of us... It also represents when something very violent and tragic disrupts the flow...Then this piece also includes the rebuilding and the re-imagining of the better version of the very first.” If you listen to this piece carefully, you will perceive this pattern: the first flowing part of the ethereal music which symbolises our life flowing like a river, then after a sudden pause (a little bit before the middle of the piece) you can understand a kind of reversing of the flow, a dramatic change which throws you off path in life and gradually grows and reaches its climax, and then  just before the ending (around 1 minute before the end) – the first flowing theme returns, but this time it is more shining and more optimistic.

Mr. Yo Yo Ma played this suite in the vaccination centre, when he received his second dose Anti-COVID vaccine, brightening the mood of everyone present there, as a symbol of the better future to come. Suggested title for this music: "River of Hope"
