"Reflections of light" (Nocturne in E Flat major Op. 9)

Composer

Frederic Chopin

Period

Romantic

Instruments

Piano

Composed by Chopin at the age of 20, this piece is one of the most popular Nocturnes (works that were inspired by the night with beautiful song-like melodies and with some hint of melancholy).

Back in the 1800s when it was first published, this piece became instantly famous and it was the most popular music to be played while having guests in the evenings. Even today, it is still a very widely heard tune which  inspires and captivates. And although there is a melancholic thread running through the entire piece, the music does not make you feel sad but, to the contrary, has some kind of uplifting effect. It combines darkness and brightness in a very masterful way, like the reflections of radiant light on  dark waters, creating a magical scenery.

In this video you can listen to Rachmaninoff's interpretation of this piece which is quite amazing as one of the greatest composers and pianists of all times performs the music of another musical genius, Chopin.

Suggested title for this piece: "Reflections of light".
