"The romance" from "The Gadfly suite"

Instruments

Strings/Keyboard

This is the score for the Soviet film "Gadfly" which was produced in 1955. The movie was based on the romantic novel of the same name by an Irish author, Ethel Voynich. The story was about the life of a young Englishman (the eponymous "Gadfly") in the 1830s in Italy who was fighting for Italy's independence from the Austrian rule, but was betrayed by the catholic church, so he lost all faith and renounced the church. The "Gadfly" is the idealistic hero who fights against all social injustices but at the end  sacrifices his life for his ideals.  At the same time, different forms of love (with his childhood friend Gemma and his religious mentor Montanelli) are depicted in the story via their tragic relationship with the hero.  The novel is a story of revolution, heroism, faith, disillusionment and romance and so it seduced the ex-Soviet Union in the 1950s by selling millions of copies, also being promoted by the Soviet regime for its heroic and egalitarian ideals.  The Soviet Union government sponsored the production of the film "Gadfly" for which Shostakovich wrote the soundtrack, called the "Gadfly Suite" which supports the narrative of the film.

The "Romance" is a sentimental violin melody, the love theme of the movie, which is broadly played in the film's romantic or love scenes.
