This piano piece is one of Schubert's most important works, composed at the last year of his life. The music is one of the most poetic and beautiful in the classical music world, unique and inspiring, with a variety of haunting melodies. It begins with a sharply dotted rhythm which then gives way to a pleading, dreamy melody. At times, the melody becomes overemotional, hiding a wide range emotions: nostalgia, regret, sadness, even tension towards the end of the piece, but also playfulness and beautiful dreaming in other parts of the music. As Schubert had told a friend, he had "heard an angel sing" and tried to reproduce this effect.
Schubert dedicated this music to a woman who used to be one of his piano students and with whom Schubert was always secretly in love. A suggested title for this music: "Angel's Fantasy".
