With this mostly vocal work, Haydn, already in his late 50s, is attempting to move the boundaries of classical music, especially with the work's opening which was very innovative for that period.
This piece depicts and celebrates the universe, before the Earth was created, so there are no harmonies, as one would expect to hear in the classical period. The "Creation" consists of an opening and 3 parts and evokes the chaotic dimensions of the universe. Haydn achieves the representation of empty space or the "infinity nothing" in his music, in an ingenious and skilful way of breaking the existing musical rules. His work is based on the absence of harmony, melody and rhythmic pulse. The result is astounding and the music really takes you on a musical trip to space and the creation of the universe and our planet.
