Your gateway to classical music

"Romance" (Romance Op. 24 No 9)

Composer

Jean Sibelius

Instruments

Piano

Written in 1903, this is one of Sibelius' most popular piano works and an excellent example of the 19th century romanticism. Sibelius was criticised for writing small-scale piano pieces, as this one, instead of concentrating on large orchestral works. He had written on his diary "one has to combine things great and small. Symphonies and songs". He appreciated his piano pieces and considered the criticism unfair. This piece is a testimony of his talent to create beautiful, original and colourful melodies. It gives you the impression that a story is being told, as the intensity of the music gradually increases and the music becomes more colourful. Full of optimism, despite some darker moments which dilute after a while, this music may help visualise a vivid sunrise which reveals more colours as it progresses to finally reach a climax and fill your heart with joy and delight.
