An impromptu is music born from improvisation, a type of free-style and spontaneous music, following no formal rules. This work was not intended by Chopin, its composer, to be published, not even after his death. The assumption is that it bore many similarities with Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, so Chopin might not have wanted to publish it. As Ernst Oster, a pianist and musicologist, has written: "The Fantaisie-Impromptu is perhaps the only instance where one genius discloses to us-if only by means of a composition of his own-what he actually hears in the work of another genius".
The first part of the music gives you the sense of restlessness, like a terrible scary thought or dream is torturing your mind. As you are captured by negative thoughts and have begun your free-fall to hopelessness, suddenly an unexpected gate opens to another dimension and you enter into a beautiful and serene world reflected by the melodic second part of this piece.
This piece has an immense virtuosic energy, which combined with the exquisite melody of middle part, makes this it one of the most alluring of Chopin's works. Suggested title: "Gateway to another dimension".
