Composed in 1900 by Antonin Dvorak, who was inspired by traditional folk music, this is an emotional music piece, part of the opera "Rusalka". The opera is about an immortal water nymph, who wants to become human and give up her immortality after falling in love with a hunter/prince.
Rusalka sings this song to ask the moon to shine on the prince so that he can remember her in his dreams and fall in love with her. However, the story has an unexpected development: the prince dumps Rusalka, but when he realises his mistake, he is willing to sacrifice himself to give her back her immortality.
One of Dvorak's most loved melodies, this music brings the listener to a world of fairy tales and dreams, full of mysterious forests, magical lakes and bewitched elves.
