Johann Pachelbel

German composer, renowned for organ music and recognised as important composer of church and chamber music. He wrote more than 500 pieces over his lifetime. He was a close friend to the Bach family, godfather to one of Bach's sisters, and music teacher to Bach's older brother who then became Bach's teacher.

Born in Nuremberg, he was noticed for his early talent, he studied music at the University of Resenburg and then occupied a post as an organist in Stuttgart and Vienna before returning to his hometown, Nuremberg, to work as the organist of the church St. Sebalduskirche and stay there until his death.

Pachelbel was one of the most important composers of the southern German organ tradition and is considered the precursor of Johann Sebastian Bach, who lived a few decades later.
